Well-dressed grasshopper

For once, a grasshopper let me approach without flying away. Maybe he realized that I couldn't climb his rock in a blackberry patch.

Look at his cute "shoes"! (Click on photo.)
For now, he's unidentified.

Found at Mud Bay, end of August.

  1. I suspect he's a type of spur-throated grasshopper--one of these http://bugguide.net/node/view/41866/bgpage or one of the others of the Melanoplus genus. Their larger body to wingspan ratio limits their maneuverability and duration of flight, flying only shallow curves and straight lines.

  2. Yes, that's it. Thanks, Tim!

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
